Tommy Flanagan was an acclaimed American jazz pianist and composer, born in 1930 in Detroit. Influenced early on by Art Tatum, Teddy Wilson, and Nat King Cole, as well as bebop greats, he quickly established himself after moving to New York in 1956, recording with legendary artists such as Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, and John Coltrane. Flanagan is especially known for his long association with Ella Fitzgerald, serving as her accompanist and musical director for over a decade. Renowned for his elegant, sophisticated style, he led countless trio sessions and appeared on more than 200 recordings as a sideman. Flanagan’s refined touch and artistry made him one of jazz’s most respected pianists, influencing generations of musicians.
