The Church are an influential Australian rock band formed in Sydney in 1980. Known for their ethereal and psychedelic-tinged sound, their early music embraced new wave and neo-psychedelia, later evolving into lush, atmospheric styles associated with dream pop and alternative rock. The band's signature shimmering guitar work and introspective moods have earned both acclaim and a dedicated cult following worldwide. The original lineup featured Steve Kilbey on vocals and bass, Peter Koppes and Marty Willson-Piper on guitars, and Nick Ward on drums. Over the years, several lineup changes occurred, with Tim Powles joining as drummer in the 1990s and guitarist Ian Haug arriving in 2013. The Church found early success with their debut single "The Unguarded Moment" and achieved international recognition with their 1988 hit "Under the Milky Way" from the album Starfish. While mainstream stardom was brief, their influence has endured, and they were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2010. The Church continue to record and tour, with their most recent album, Eros Zeta and the Perfumed Guitars, released in 2024.
