Silverchair was an influential Australian rock band formed in 1992 in Newcastle, New South Wales by Daniel Johns, Ben Gillies, and Chris Joannou. Originally known as Innocent Criminals, they found fame after winning a national demo competition in 1994 and soon signed with Murmur. Silverchair’s debut album Frogstomp became a major success, launching them onto both Australian and international charts.
Known for their evolving alternative rock sound, Silverchair started with a grunge style before exploring orchestral and art rock influences in later albums. All five of their studio albums debuted at number one on the ARIA Albums Chart, with standout releases including Frogstomp, Freak Show, Neon Ballroom, Diorama, and Young Modern. Major hits like Tomorrow, Freak, and Straight Lines topped the singles chart.
Silverchair has sold over 10 million albums worldwide and is the most awarded artist in ARIA Music Awards history, collecting 21 wins. After a hiatus in 2003 and returning for a final album and major tour in 2007, the band announced an indefinite hiatus in 2011.
