Peter, Paul and Mary were a prominent American folk group formed in New York City in 1961, during the folk music revival. The trio included Peter Yarrow, Paul Stookey, and Mary Travers. Known for their harmonies and insightful songs, their repertoire featured original material as well as works by Bob Dylan and other folk artists. Their debut album achieved major chart success, helping to bring folk music into the mainstream during the 1960s. Influenced by artists like Woody Guthrie and the Weavers, the group was recognized for their role in the social commentary of that era. After Mary Travers passed away in 2009, Yarrow and Stookey continued as a duo until Yarrow’s death in 2025. Honors include induction into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame and the Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
