Michael Wayne Campbell, born February 1, 1950, is an acclaimed American guitarist and vocalist best known for his work with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. He co-wrote some of the band’s most celebrated songs, including Refugee, Here Comes My Girl, You Got Lucky, and Runnin’ Down a Dream. In addition to his time with the Heartbreakers, Campbell is a sought-after session musician and songwriter, contributing to Don Henley’s hits The Boys of Summer and The Heart of the Matter, as well as collaborating extensively with Stevie Nicks. He joined Fleetwood Mac for their 2018-2019 world tour alongside Neil Finn. Campbell currently leads his band, the Dirty Knobs, who have released three albums as of 2024. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the Heartbreakers in 2002 and was named one of Rolling Stone’s top 100 guitarists.
