Jóhann Gunnar Jóhannsson (1969–2018) was an acclaimed Icelandic composer known for his innovative fusion of classical orchestration and modern electronic sounds. His evocative solo albums began in 2002, with his final release, Orphée, arriving through Deutsche Grammophon in 2016. Jóhannsson achieved international recognition for his film scores, including those for Prisoners, Sicario, and Arrival by Denis Villeneuve, as well as The Theory of Everything by James Marsh. He received multiple Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations, winning the Golden Globe for The Theory of Everything. In addition to composing, he contributed to film as a music and sound consultant and completed his only directorial project, Last and First Men, in 2017. His influence continues through posthumously released works and his unique musical legacy.
