Jackie Wilson was an influential American singer who played a key role in transforming rhythm and blues into soul music. Known as "Mr. Excitement" for his electrifying stage presence and vocal power, he became one of the most dynamic performers in the history of soul, R and B, and rock and roll. Born in Highland Park, Michigan, Wilson first gained recognition with Billy Ward and His Dominoes before launching a successful solo career in 1957. Over his career, he achieved more than 50 charting singles, including several number one R and B hits and multiple top ten pop hits. After a heart attack in 1975 left him in a minimally conscious state, Wilson passed away in 1984. His legacy is marked by inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the National Rhythm and Blues Hall of Fame, as well as recognition by Rolling Stone and NPR among the greatest singers and voices of all time.
