Free were a British rock band formed in London in 1968 by Paul Rodgers, Paul Kossoff, Andy Fraser, and Simon Kirke. They are best known for their classic hits All Right Now and Wishing Well. The band gained widespread recognition with their 1970 album Fire and Water, which included All Right Now and led to a landmark performance at the Isle of Wight Festival before an audience of hundreds of thousands. Though initially struggling with sales, Free became one of the leading British blues rock acts of the early 1970s, selling over 20 million records and performing more than 700 concerts worldwide. After several line-up changes and Fraser’s departure in 1972, the group released their final album Heartbreaker in 1973 before disbanding. Members went on to other projects, most notably Paul Rodgers and Simon Kirke forming Bad Company. Free’s influence is recognized by Rolling Stone, which named them pioneers of British hard rock, with Rodgers and Kossoff featured in its greatest singers and guitarists lists. The band was signed to Island Records in the UK and A and M Records in North America.
