Elvis Costello, born Declan Patrick MacManus in 1954, is an English singer, songwriter, record producer, author, and television host. Emerging from a musical family during the late 1970s punk rock boom, he blended sharp, literate songwriting with punk energy, helping shape the new wave movement. His first album, My Aim Is True, introduced enduring songs like Alison, and his follow-ups, This Year’s Model and Armed Forces with the Attractions, established his reputation and secured several UK Top 30 singles. Costello’s music spans a wide range of styles, from rock, R and B, and country, to jazz, classical, and pop. He is also known for his collaborative projects with artists such as Paul McCartney, Burt Bacharach, the Brodsky Quartet, Allen Toussaint, and the Roots. Many notable musicians have covered his songs, and his own versions of tracks like Oliver’s Army and his cover of Peace, Love, and Understanding have become classics. Costello has received multiple prestigious awards, including Grammys and a place in both the Rock and Roll and Songwriters Halls of Fame. In addition to his music career, he hosted the interview series Spectacle and authored the acclaimed memoir Unfaithful Music and Disappearing Ink.
