Anthrax

Anthrax

Anthrax is a pioneering thrash metal band from New York City, formed in 1981 by guitarist Scott Ian and bassist Dan Lilker. As one of the "Big Four" of thrash metal alongside Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer, Anthrax helped define the genre in the 1980s. The band was also among the first influential thrash groups from the East Coast. Over the years, Anthrax has seen several lineup changes, with Scott Ian remaining the sole constant member. The group’s current lineup features Scott Ian, drummer Charlie Benante, bassist Frank Bello, vocalist Joey Belladonna, and lead guitarist Jonathan Donais. Anthrax gained major recognition with their 1987 album Among the Living, a landmark release in thrash metal. This success was followed by popular albums such as State of Euphoria and Persistence of Time, the latter earning their first Grammy nomination. The 1993 album Sound of White Noise, featuring vocalist John Bush, became their highest charting release. Known for energetic performances and genre-blending collaborations, including work with hip hop group Public Enemy, Anthrax has released eleven studio albums and achieved several gold records. The band’s influence and enduring popularity have made them important figures in heavy metal, with global sales reaching around ten million records. Their twelfth studio album is expected in 2026.
