The Monkees were an influential American pop rock band formed in Los Angeles during the 1960s. Originally created for the NBC television sitcom "The Monkees," the band featured Micky Dolenz, Davy Jones, Michael Nesmith, and Peter Tork. Thanks to the popularity of their TV show, they quickly rose to fame and became one of the era’s most successful acts, producing four number-one albums and major hits like "Last Train to Clarksville," "I'm a Believer," and "Daydream Believer." Although initially a made-for-TV group with limited creative control, they soon took charge of their music and recorded as a real band. Following the end of their TV show, the group’s success declined, and they disbanded in 1970. The Monkees later reunited for various tours and albums, most notably in 1986 and for a farewell tour in 2021, leaving a lasting impact on pop culture.
