The tambourine can be held in the hand or mounted on a stand and can be played in many ways, from gently tapping or shaking jingles to a sharp hand strike or hitting the tambourine on the leg or hip as part of the beat. The word tambourine has its origin in the Middle Persian word tambur "lute, drum" (via Middle French tambour).
