Macklemore and Ryan Lewis were an influential American hip hop duo from Seattle, active primarily between 2009 and 2017. Formed by rapper Macklemore and producer Ryan Lewis, they gained major success with their debut studio album, The Heist, released in 2012. The album featured the chart-topping singles "Thrift Shop" and "Can't Hold Us," both of which reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100. Their independent approach to music distribution made headlines, as they achieved mainstream success without traditional major label backing. The duo won four Grammy Awards in 2014, including Best New Artist and Best Rap Album. They released a second album, This Unruly Mess I've Made, in 2016 before going on an indefinite hiatus in 2017.
