D'Addario XLB085 Single Bass String

Single Replacement Bass String for Long-Scale Instruments

The D'Addario XLB085 is a single nickel-wound bass guitar string built for long-scale electric basses. It uses a round-wound nickel-plated steel wrap over a hex core, the same construction found across D'Addario's popular XL bass string line. At .085" gauge (2.16 mm), it commonly serves as the A string in a standard 4-string set, though players also use it to customize lighter or heavier sets. Buying singles makes sense when one string breaks mid-gig or when building a non-standard gauge combination.

Who Is This String For?

This single is the right choice for bass players who need a replacement string for a long-scale electric bass without buying a full set. It suits anyone building a custom gauge combination — for example, mixing a heavier .085" A string with lighter gauges on the other strings for a balanced feel. Round-wound nickel-plated construction delivers a bright, articulate tone that works across rock, pop, funk, and jazz styles. As part of D'Addario's XL series, the XLB085 pairs naturally with other XLB singles for a consistent voice across all four strings.
