D'Addario J813 1/8M D Violin Strings

Reliable D String Replacement for 1/8 Size Student Violins

The D'Addario Prelude Violin Single D String in 1/8 scale, medium tension, is a replacement string designed specifically for the smallest student violins in the D'Addario Prelude line. Built on a solid steel core and nickel-wound for a warm, focused tone, this single D string gives teachers, parents, and young players a dependable way to replace a worn or broken D string without buying a full set. The 1/8 scale playing length of 9 1/2 inches (241 mm) matches the dimensions of fractional violins used by beginners, so the string sits correctly on the bridge and nut for proper intonation and comfortable left-hand spacing.

Medium tension is the most popular choice in the Prelude range because it suits the majority of players — light enough for small hands to press down cleanly, yet firm enough to produce a clear, resonant sound under the bow. The solid steel core is unaffected by temperature and humidity changes, which means the string stays in tune and responds consistently whether the instrument is in a cold practice room or a warm recital hall. D'Addario's unique damping process gives Prelude strings a warm tone and excellent bow response, helping young players develop a full, singing sound from their very first notes.

Who This String Is For

The D'Addario Prelude 1/8 Medium Tension D String is the right choice for beginning violin students on 1/8 size instruments who need a reliable, warm-sounding replacement D string. It is well suited to school orchestra programs, private studios, and Suzuki-style early learners where the D string is the most frequently replaced string due to wear from open-string playing and beginner bow technique. Teachers will appreciate that the medium tension matches the rest of a standard Prelude 1/8 set, so a single replacement integrates seamlessly without retuning the whole instrument.

Parents looking for an affordable, durable string for a child's fractional violin will find the solid steel core and nickel winding hold up well to daily practice, while the sealed packaging keeps the string fresh until it is needed. Because Prelude is described by educators as the preferred choice for student strings due to its warm tone, economy, and durability, this single D string is a practical addition to any school or studio string inventory.
