D'Addario J912 MM Viola Strings

A Reliable Replacement D String for Medium-Scale Violas

The D'Addario Prelude Viola Single D String is a single replacement string designed for medium-scale violas, sized to fit instruments with a body length of 15 to 15 3/4 inches and a playing length of 360 mm. Built around a solid steel core, this string delivers the warm, focused tone that has made the Prelude line a long-standing favorite among string teachers and school orchestra programs. The unique damping process used in production softens the bright edge of traditional steel strings, giving the D string a rounder character that sits comfortably in ensemble and solo settings alike.

Medium tension provides a balanced feel under the bow and fingers, suiting the majority of advancing students and amateur players who need a string that responds predictably across classical, modern, jazz, and folk repertoire. Because the steel core is unaffected by temperature and humidity changes, the D string holds its pitch and tonal character through shifting classroom, rehearsal, and performance conditions. Packaged in sealed pouches that shield the string from corrosion, every replacement arrives ready to install and play, and the solid blue silking at the ball end matches the rest of the Prelude viola line for a consistent look across the instrument.

Who This String Is For

The D'Addario Prelude Viola Single D String is the right choice for students, educators, and amateur viola players who need a dependable replacement D string that stays in tune and sounds warm from the first lesson onward. It is well suited to school orchestra programs, private studio teachers, and advancing players working through graded repertoire where a stable, predictable string response matters more than the nuance of a premium gut or synthetic core. The medium-tension calibration suits the majority of right-handed viola players across classical, modern, jazz, and country styles, and the ball-end fitting installs without modification on standard viola tailpieces. For players building a complete set, the D string pairs with the matching Prelude A, G, and C strings to deliver a consistent voice across all four strings.
