D'Addario J914 LM Viola Strings

Reliable Replacement C String for Long-Scale Violas

The D'Addario Prelude Viola Single C String is a standalone replacement string designed for full-size (long scale) violas with body lengths between 406 mm and 432 mm (16"–17"). Built around a solid steel core with a pitch-stable alloy, this string is engineered for unparalleled longevity and durability — the greatest amount of longevity of all the string cores according to the manufacturer. A unique damping process gives the Prelude C string its characteristic warm tone and excellent bow response, making it one of the best-sounding student strings available.

Unlike synthetic-core alternatives, the solid steel construction stays unaffected by temperature and humidity changes, so the string holds its pitch and tonal character through daily practice, classroom use, and travel. The ball-end construction with a solid blue silking makes installation straightforward on standard viola tailpieces, and the medium tension provides a balanced feel under the bow without excessive finger pressure.

Who This String Is For

This single C string is the right choice for students, educators, and advancing players who need a durable, pitch-stable replacement for a full-size viola. It suits players working through classical repertoire, fiddle styles, jazz, and alternative genres — all of which the manufacturer highlights as compatible playing styles for the Prelude line. Because the solid steel core resists humidity and temperature swings, it is particularly well-suited to school music programs, youth orchestras, and beginner-to-intermediate players who need a reliable string that holds up to frequent handling.

Players upgrading from a worn or broken factory C string will find the medium tension balanced and comfortable, while teachers outfitting student violas can rely on the consistent quality of a string designed, engineered, and manufactured in the USA. The single-string format also makes it a practical option for anyone who needs to replace just the C string without purchasing a full set.
