D'Addario NYL050W Single Guitar String

Single Classical Guitar String for Replacement and Custom Setups

The D'Addario NYL050W is a single classical guitar string sold individually, not as part of a full set. It carries a .050" (1.27 mm) gauge and is wound with silver-plated copper over a nylon core, the same construction used in the bass strings of D'Addario's Pro Arte and other classical string lines. This makes it a direct replacement when one bass string wears out, breaks, or needs to be swapped for a different tuning, without forcing the player to buy a complete set they don't need.

Classical guitarists who play extended-range instruments such as 7-string Brazilian violões, 8-string romantic guitars, or 11-string alto guitars rely on individual strings like the NYL050W to build custom sets that match their specific scale length and tuning. Players experimenting with alternate tunings — for example, dropping the low A down to a G or low C — also use this gauge as a starting point when the stock string tension no longer fits the new pitch.

Who This String Is For

The NYL050W is the right choice for classical guitarists who need a single replacement bass string at the .050" gauge rather than a full set. Standard 6-string classical players will find it useful as a low A replacement, while players of multi-string classical instruments — 7-string Brazilian violões, 8-string romantic guitars, 11-string alto guitars — use it as a sub-bass string in custom sets built for non-standard tunings.

Players exploring alternate or lowered tunings on a regular classical guitar can also use this gauge to maintain proper tension when dropping the low A down to G or lower. The silver-plated copper winding produces a warm, rounded bass tone with enough brightness to cut through in ensemble playing, and the nylon core keeps the feel gentle on the right-hand fingers during extended practice or performance sessions.
